Road to LA28: ICC Sets January-February Window for Olympic Qualifiers

Tournament Window: The men's and women's qualifiers for the LA28 Olympics have been officially scheduled by the ICC to take place in January and February 2028 (shifted from the originally pencilled-in 2027 window). Format & Structure: Each qualifier tournament will feature eight nations, comprising the seven highest-ranked teams (outside of automatic qualifiers) and the winner of the Caribbean Regional Qualifier. Specific venues are yet to be finalized. Qualification Criteria Updates Men's Direct Entry: The top four teams in the ICC T20I rankings as of December 31, 2026, secure direct qualification slots as the top representatives from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Oceania. Host Nation (USA): The USA men's team (currently ranked 13th) is safely inside the top 15 of T20I rankings required to lock in direct entry as hosts. The USA women's team (currently ranked 19th) is at risk of missing automatic qualification. Women's Contingency Rule: In an update to previous guidelines, if the USA women fail to meet the ranking criteria by December 31, 2026, the fifth automatic qualification spot will be reallocated based on the final standings of the inaugural Women's Champions Trophy 2027 (with a cut-off date of March 1, 2027). Broader ICC Calendar Highlights Back-to-Back T20 World Cups (2028): The Women's T20 World Cup (hosted by Pakistan) will run from September 7 to October 1, 2028, followed closely by the 20-team Men's T20 World Cup (hosted across Australia and New Zealand) from October 12 to November 12, leaving just an 11-day gap. World Test Championship: The 2029 WTC final has been officially slated to take place in England from June 8 to 12.
