Hasan Mahmud takes Six, but West Indies continue to dominate in Sylhet
At the conclusion of Day 2 of the second Test in Sylhet, West Indies maintained their advantage despite Hasan Mahmud's six-wicket haul. Mahmud's 6 for 90 limited West Indies to a total of 356, but the visitors then reduced Bangladesh to 88 for 3 at Stumps. The hosts, already 0-1 down in the series, were behind by 268 runs and possibly one player short.
Resuming at 235/4, West Indies added 121 runs on Day 2 before being bowled out shortly after Lunch. As the pair put up a century stand early in the day, Jangoo continued his impressive knock with good support from Greaves. Meanwhile, opener Shadman Islam twisted his left ankle while attempting to stop the ball at fine leg in the morning session, causing Bangladesh to suffer an injury setback. He was taken off the field on a stretcher and taken to the hospital for an MRI scan and additional evaluation.
Before Bangladesh responded with the second new ball, Jangoo and Greaves made 106 for the fifth wicket. Mahmud dismissed Jangoo and Roston Chase off successive deliveries before coming agonisingly close to a hat-trick. Through a successful review, Joshua Bishop was able to win the appeal, but Litton Das later stumped him for 23 in Mahmud's over. The well-set Greaves was then bowled out by Mehidy Hasan Miraz for 51, and Mahmud came back after lunch to bowl out Shamar Joseph, completing his sixth Test five-wicket haul.
The innings, however, prolonged thanks to useful contributions from the lower order that pushed the total past 350. Jomel Warrican and Jayden Seales added 33 for the final wicket to frustrate the hosts. Mehidy then caught Seales lbw to end the innings.
Nayeem Hasan walked out to partner Tanzid Hasan Tamim instead of their usual opener Shadman, but the first stand was short-lived. Nayeem was thrown out by Seales, and Tanzid was caught by Greaves, putting Bangladesh in trouble at 22 for 2. Towhid Hridoy and Najmul Hossain Shanto developed a watchful partnership that assisted Bangladesh in reaching 50. However, Najmul's innings came to an end when Joseph bowled him for an 18-ball 65. When Mushfiqur Rahim was on 10, the umpire's call prevented him from being out lbw in Warrican's over, giving him a lucky break.
Even when the floodlights were turned on and the umpires occasionally pulled out the light meters, there was assistance for the bowlers and continued testing for the batters. Rahim and Hridoy managed a few boundaries and took their stand to 37 but it was mostly slow going for Bangladesh, with bad light eventually ending the day's play.
