Building for Los Angeles: Inside Australia's Long-Term Strategy with Mike Hussey

Coaching Consultant: Michael Hussey has been appointed as a coaching consultant for the Australian men's team, with a primary focus on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and T20 World Cup, alongside supporting the team for the 2027 Ashes and ODI World Cup. Declined England Offer: Hussey turned down an approach from long-time colleague Stephen Fleming to join the England Test coaching staff earlier this year, choosing instead to commit to the Australian setup. McDonald was thrilled to welcome Hussey into the ranks. "Mike has been a highly valued part of our staff in the past and brings a considerable skill set which is complementary to the coaches and players," he said. "Not only is his expertise as a player and coach across multiple formats, competitions, countries invaluable, so are his qualities as a person." Hussey's major focus will be in the T20 space, having been part of England's winning T20 World Cup coaching group with Matthew Mott in 2022. Immediate Schedule & Team Context Upcoming T20I Series: Hussey will begin his formal role immediately during the upcoming T20I series against England, working alongside assistant coach Andre Borovec while head coach Andrew McDonald rests. Balancing Commitments: While Hussey has previously assisted Australia on a short-term basis (primarily as a batting consultant ahead of Perth Tests), his previous availability was limited by commentary duties and franchise coaching roles with the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL and Welsh Fire in The Hundred.
