Shreyas Iyer to lead in last two New Zealand ODIs, Kushagra earns maiden call-up
After missing the previous ODI series against the West Indies due to India's T20I commitments during the Asian Games, Shreyas Iyer has been reinstated as India's ODI vice-captain for the upcoming five-match series against New Zealand.
Iyer will serve as vice-captain for the first three One-Day Internationals before taking over for the fourth and fifth games, with Ishan Kishan serving as his replacement. This enables Shubman Gill, the regular captain of ODIs and Tests, to concentrate on preparing for the World Test Championship cycle's two-match Test series that follows the ODIs.
The availability of Prasidh Krishna in the ODI squad for the first three games is contingent on his fitness. During the second one-day international against the West Indies, he suffered a left hamstring injury and was replaced by Anshul Kamboj. In the meantime, Kamboj has been included in the New Zealand squad for the first three One-Day Internationals.
India have also made changes to their squad for the latter half of the series, with Tilak Varma and Kumar Kushagra coming into the 16-member squad for the fourth and fifth ODIs. In addition to being members of the Test team, Prasidh and Kamboj are not included in the squad for the final two matches. Auqib Nabi, meanwhile, has been included in the squad for the fourth and fifth ODIs.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli feature in both squads, alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Naman Dhir, Gurnoor Brar, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav. Incidentally, Reddy, Kuldeep and Siraj are also part of the Test squad but have been retained for the last two matches. For the first three matches, KL Rahul will be the wicketkeeper; for the final two One-Day Internationals, Kishan will take over, with Kishan expected to join the Test preparations.
The ODI series begins on November 4, following India's five-match T20I series. Auckland will host the first ODI, while Wellington will host the second on November 7. The third match will be played in Hamilton on November 10, and the final two One-Day Internationals will be played in Mount Maunganui on November 13 and 15. The Test series begins on November 19.
