Jonny Bairstow Heads to Australia After Securing Deal With Melbourne Renegades

England star Jonny Bairstow has officially signed with the Melbourne Renegades for the upcoming BBL|16 (2026–27) season, making his long-awaited debut in Australia’s premier T20 tournament. Maiden BBL Campaign: Bairstow fills the overseas slot left vacant by New Zealand's Tim Seifert. Though he previously signed with the Melbourne Stars for BBL|10 in 2020, he withdrew prior to the season following an England Test recall. Embracing the "Ashes Villain" Label: Bairstow gained notoriety among Australian crowds following his controversial stumping by Alex Carey during the 2023 Lord’s Ashes Test. Addressing the potential reception from local fans, Bairstow called past incidents "water under the bridge" and expressed excitement about calling the MCG his new home venue. Reunion with Familiar Faces: The signing was facilitated in part by Yorkshire connections, including former Australian international Clint McKay (Renegades high-performance manager), and Bairstow's recent Yorkshire T20 Blast teammate, Renegades captain Will Sutherland. World-Class Marquee Addition: Renegades head coach Luke Ronchi praised the 100-Test veteran and World Cup winner, emphasizing that Bairstow's extensive international experience and power-hitting will be vital as the franchise aims to return to the BBL finals. "But just as importantly, he plays the game in a way that we want to play. He's aggressive, he puts pressure back on the opposition and he's capable of changing a game very quickly. "We're building a squad that we believe can play an exciting and aggressive brand of cricket and Jonny is a great fit for that." Bairstow's signing follows Ben Stokes' return to the BBL with Adelaide Strikers. Zak Crawley is headed back to Perth Scorchers while the Overton twins will play for Melbourne Stars this season. Tom Curran has moved up to Brisbane Heat.
