India beat Pakistan to win second Asian Games gold medal in men's cricket

India won the men's cricket competition at the Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan, beating Pakistan by 19 runs to win their second consecutive Asian Games championship. While Pakistan were playing in their first-ever men's cricket gold-medal match at the Asian Games and were aiming for their maiden gold, India, who won gold at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, entered the final as the defending champions. The two teams also met for the first time at the Asian Games in the final. India won the toss and chose to bat first, scoring 211/6 in 20 overs. India got off to a flying start thanks to Abhishek Sharma's 61 runs off just 28 deliveries. His seven sixes put him joint-top for the most sixes by an Indian batter in an India-Pakistan T20I innings alongside Yuvraj Singh. Tilak Varma made a late attack to remain unbeaten on 51 while Vaibhav Sooryavanshi contributed 15 out of nine deliveries before being dismissed. Pakistan had a target of 212 runs when India scored 69 more runs in the final four overs. Before Washington Sundar took the wicket of Pakistan's captain Sahibzada Farhan, Maaz Sadaqat and Pakistan's chase began with a 33-run partnership. Hasan Nawaz led the Men in Green by putting up a strong fight as wickets kept falling. In 51 balls, he hit seven sixes and five fours for 96 runs. Additionally, Nawaz collaborated with Saim Ayub for 87 runs. Despite this, Axal Patel, Shivam Dube, and Sundar each took two wickets for India's bowling attack. Ravi Bishnoi was the only bowler who struggled as he conceded 44 runs in three overs. The mix of the two bowling attacks in the final was an interesting aspect. Jasprit Bumrah, a specialist fast bowler, and seamer Dube rounded out India's lineup. Patel, Sundar, and Bishnoi provided spin options. Sufiyan Muqeem and Abrar Ahmed led Pakistan's spin attack, with Ahmed Daniyal serving as their sole specialist pace option. India now has 81 medals and 19 gold medals from the 2026 Asian Games. After the women's team successfully defended its title earlier in the tournament, this marks their second gold medal in cricket at the Games. At the same time, Pakistan wins its second silver medal at the current Games, bringing its total to eight.
