Dhananjaya de Silva Resigns as Sri Lanka Test Captain With Immediate Effect

Immediate Resignation: Dhananjaya de Silva has stepped down as Sri Lanka’s Test captain with immediate effect. Passing the Torch: In his official announcement, the 35-year-old all-rounder stated that it was time to "pass the mantle to the next generation" and allow fresh leadership to build toward the future. Available as Player: De Silva confirmed he remains fully committed and available for selection as a player across all formats for Sri Lanka. Captaining Record: Since taking over the leadership role from Dimuth Karunaratne in January 2024, de Silva led Sri Lanka in 18 Test matches, securing 7 victories. During his tenure as captain, he scored 1,130 runs at an average of 36.45 and chipped in with 9 wickets SLC Acknowledgment: Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) accepted his decision, publicly thanking him for his services and leadership during his two-year stint in charge. Next Successor: SLC is yet to name a new Test captain, with an official announcement expected ahead of the team's next red-ball assignment. After Sri Lanka wrapped up a 1-0 home series victory against Bangladesh in June 2025, the team had no Tests on their schedule for a full 12 months. They are also currently in the midst of a WTC cycle that features just 12 Tests for them - the minimum number. De Silva has repeatedly spoken about the significant challenges posed by such a bare schedule, particularly for the Test specialists. De Silva's resignation was part of a substantial wave of changes in the leadership and management of the men's teams. Earlier this year, Kusal Mendis was given the white-ball captaincy, replacing Charith Asalanka as leader. Mendis is among the players the selectors will consider for Test captaincy as well.
